Traditional Braces and their Purpose

Considering traditional braces? Traditional braces are a type of orthodontic treatment used to straighten crooked teeth, close gaps, and improve a person’s bite and smile. Traditional metal braces are composed of metal brackets and wires that are attached to the natural teeth. The brackets and wires work together to apply pressure to the teeth, moving them into the desired position over a period of time. Traditional metal braces are an effective and reliable treatment for orthodontic issues and can provide excellent results in a relatively short period of time.

Benefits Of Braces Orthodontic Treatment

Braces are an orthodontic treatment that Dr. Bernuy can use to improve both the function and appearance of the teeth. Here are the benefits of wearing braces in more detail:

  1. Improved biting/chewing/eating: Braces can help correct malocclusions, which are misalignments of the teeth and/or jaw. When the teeth and jaw are properly aligned, it can improve biting, chewing, and eating, making it easier and more comfortable to enjoy a variety of foods.
  2. Improved dental hygiene/care: Misaligned teeth can make it difficult to properly clean the teeth and gums, which can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental problems. Braces can help straighten the teeth, making them easier to clean and reducing the risk of dental issues.
  3. Corrects over/underbites: Overbites and underbites occur when the upper and lower jaws do not align properly. Braces can help correct these issues, improving the bite and reducing the risk of dental problems such as tooth decay, gum disease, and jaw pain.
  4. Corrects misaligned teeth: Misaligned teeth can cause a variety of dental issues, including difficulty chewing, speaking, and cleaning the teeth. Braces can help straighten misaligned teeth, improving their function and appearance.
  5. Better-looking smile: Braces can also improve the appearance of the smile by correcting issues such as crooked or crowded teeth, gaps between teeth, and other cosmetic concerns. A straighter, more even smile can boost self-confidence and improve overall oral health.

It’s important to note that the benefits of braces will vary depending on each patient’s individual needs and treatment goals. If you are considering braces, it’s important to consult with our orthodontist who can help determine the best course of treatment for you.

How Do Traditional Braces Work?

Traditional braces 2 Bernuy TX

Traditional braces involve the use of brackets and wires with straightening teeth. Brackets are bonded to the front of the teeth and are connected by an archwire. The archwire will be tightened by the orthodontist to apply pressure to the teeth and move them into the desired positions. Depending on the complexity of the case, the braces may be adjusted every four to six weeks to continue the process of tooth movement. The patient will also be required to wear elastics, or rubber bands, to help move the teeth into the desired positions. The braces will be worn for about two years on average, depending on the severity of the case, and the patient will need to visit orthodontist Dr. Bernuy from time to time to ensure the teeth are moving correctly.

Traditional Orthodontics for Children and Teens

Traditional braces are a form of orthodontic treatment that is specifically designed to help children and teens align their teeth and jaws correctly. This form of treatment is aimed at improving the appearance of the teeth and mouth, as well as helping to create a healthier bite. This can help prevent the development of more serious dental problems later in life. Traditional orthodontics typically involves the use of fixed braces, which are attached to the teeth and wired them together. The patient must wear the braces for a period of time, usually between one and three years, depending on the complexity of the case. During the treatment, the orthodontist will adjust the braces to gradually move the teeth into the desired position. In some cases, retainers may be used to help maintain the desired position of the teeth and jaw. Traditional orthodontics can also help correct problems such as an overbite, underbite, crossbite, and open bite. In many cases, traditional orthodontics can be combined with other treatments such as the use of clear aligners or Invisalign to help achieve the desired results. By utilizing traditional orthodontics, children, and teens can achieve a healthy and attractive smile.

What are the types of braces?

Traditional braces, also known as metal braces, have been used for many years to correct dental problems. Here are the different types of braces and their descriptions:

  1. Metal Braces: These are the most common type of braces, made of high-grade stainless steel. They are attached to the teeth with brackets and connected by archwires that apply pressure to the teeth to move them into the correct position.
  2. Ceramic Braces: These braces are similar to metal braces but are made of clear or tooth-colored materials that blend in with the teeth. They are less noticeable than metal braces but may require more maintenance to keep them clean and stain-free.
  3. Lingual Braces: These are braces that are placed on the back of the teeth, making them completely hidden from view. They are custom-made for each patient and can be more difficult to clean and adjust.
  4. Self-Ligating Braces: These are similar to metal braces but use a specialized clip instead of elastic bands to hold the archwires in place. This reduces friction and may result in shorter treatment times.
  5. Damon Braces: These are a type of self-ligating braces that use a sliding mechanism instead of the traditional elastic bands to hold the archwires in place. This allows for more natural movement of the teeth and may also result in shorter treatment times.
  6. Invisalign: These are clear, removable aligners that are custom-made for each patient. They are not technically braces but can be used to correct most mild to moderate alignment problems. They are popular among adults who prefer a more discreet orthodontic treatment option.

Damon Braces

Damon braces are a modern orthodontic treatment similar to traditional braces. Patients often have shorter treatment times, fewer appointments and have reported less discomfort as well. Want quicker treatment than traditional braces.
